K-O Directions

Post-event:   Thanks to the gracious efforts of our hosts, especially the FTC program partners for Connecticut (Dave Mellen and Brenda Semmelrock), a great day of robotics, both learning and competition, was experienced at the Kingswood-Oxford School on Saturday.  The teams (including ours!) were mostly in the early stages of meeting the challenge, but the rounds on the competition floor taught us all some valuable lessons.  We foresee great success for all the participating teams!

The mini-workshops went well - sessions on RobotC programming, engineering notebooks, Tetrix gearing and the FTC tournament experience were well received.

Field access was key to the day's utility - team practice sessions went on throughout the morning, and the mini-competition from 1:00 to 2:45 PM was fun and useful for all the participants.  Rankings were as follows:

Rank Team Name Team # High Score

QP

RP

Wins

1 MIT 2875 62 9 10 4.5
2 Cheshire 999 12 8 7 4
3 Unlimited 1 62 5 11 2.5
4 Wyvern 36 35 4 6 2
5 Colchester 2994 10 3 11 1.5
6 Norwalk 2967 42 3 10 1.5
7 Myotonics 512 12 2 7 1
8 Westport 577 10 2 6 1

Several other FTC teams participated in the Robot Rally -

Girls Like Bots (FTC 3057) from Hingham MA

The 1337 Squad (FTC 2834) from Washington CT

The Warriors (FTC 45) from Deep River CT

The awesome MIT-Lincoln Labs team showed a very capable robot (especially for the early point in the season).  I think that every team in the competition was happier to be in alliance with them in  a match!  They earned first place in the Rally, with 4 wins and 1 tie.

Team Unlimited is honored by the granting of the day's Inspire Award, by vote of our fellow participants.  We hope that sharing our experiences was useful to the rookie teams, and stand ready to help throughout the FTC season.

Awards Prizes

Early Season Inspire Award - as at the tournaments, “The Inspire Award Winner is an inspiration to other teams, acting with gracious professionalism both on and off the playing field.  This team understands how to communicate their experiences and knowledge to other teams, sponsors, and the judges.”  What is different at this pre-tournament event is that everyone who attends is a “judge.”  Each team will cast 2 votes for this award listing their 1st place choice as well as their 2nd place choice.  Since this event is all about collaboration and learning, teams should vote for the team they thought contributed the most to the other teams.

Competition

The teams that competes most successfully on the playing field with the “Face Off” challenge will win this award.  Prizes include certificates and “Face Off” field elements.

Spectators

officially, this is not a spectator event — everyone (students, coaches, parents, etc.) should plan on learning and contributing in any way they are able
